A Long Weekend in DC

My little sister is considering moving to Washington DC after she graduates college. I spent three weeks this past spring in Alexandria watching an adorable foster-fail named Trixie. I had always heard good things about Washington DC but I was skeptical because I haven’t been very fond of the other cities I’ve visited on the East Coast. The three weeks I spent there were incredible and now give DC the title of one of my favorite cities in the United States and one my sister should seriously consider living in.
I found the city to be full of life and refreshing to experience. I describe the city to my friends as diverse and not the way our university would describe diversity. Diverse in a way that makes me excited and curious to meet people from all parts of the world. I felt as though the city had something to offer people from all walks of life and of all ages. It’s got all of the bases covered: sports, arts, concert venues, big corporations and good jobs, quality education, events, politics, outdoors. I think you get the picture.

This is how I think my sister should spend a weekend in Washington DC before deciding if she would like to move there. This itinerary will immerse her in the city’s rich history and lively culture.
First things first, she'll need a cozy place to stay. I recommend either Alexandria or a charming neighborhood in DC like Georgetown or Noma. These areas offer a blend of comfort and accessibility that'll make her feel right at home. I think it would be ideal to stay near a metro stop to make getting from place to place easy and affordable. If you visit when the weather is nice try getting around on a bike or scooter. I spent a decent amount of riding an electric scooter around the city or a bike if I was in the mood to pedal.

Now, on to the main event for the first stop of the trip: the African-American history tour. Given our shared curiosity about black culture and history, I believe this tour is a must. Whether it's a guided walk, a self-guided exploration, or a hop-on-hop-off bus tour, starting with some sort of tour will set the tone for the trip. Trust me, hearing stories from a local perspective and visiting significant landmarks will provide invaluable insights into the city's past, present, and future.
This is the one I booked and attended. I liked this one because it included a ticket to the African American Museum which was completely sold out for the entire three weeks I happened to be in DC. If you attend this tour I would recommend bringing snacks and maybe something caffeinated. It’s a long day of learning and walking around even with a bus driving you around.

It takes you by all of the highlights of Washington DC and some other spots off of the beaten path that speak to African American history.
Don't forget the tour will wrap up with a visit to the new African-American history museum. While it's not part of the guided tour, it's definitely worth exploring independently. Pro tip: start from the bottom and work your way up to avoid museum fatigue!
After a day of exploration, it's time to refuel. DC boasts a plethora of dining options, including some fantastic spots for those with dietary restrictions. Whether it's gluten-free or vegan, there's something for everyone. And what better way to navigate the city than on a bike? Embrace the freedom of two wheels and discover hidden gems en route to lunch. I am sure something caught your eye during the tour or you have something that looks amazing saved from TikTok.
After lunch, explore the city, explore the monuments that everyone comes to see.
For dinner, it's time to indulge in a fine dining experience at Fancy Radish, a vegan paradise where every dish is a culinary masterpiece. It is hands down the best vegan food and one of the tastiest dining experiences. H Street has several other amazing vegan options like Sticky Fingers Diner and Eat Pow Wow.
And for those looking to extend the night, DC offers a vibrant nightlife scene with plenty of options to dance the night away. My favorite is U Street and I think it’s a great place for my twenty-something-year-old sister. Something we’ve talked about a lot before is being a midwest six, but an East Coast ten and I think it’s time for her to finally experience that firsthand.

The next day kicks off with a visit to the National Archives to lay eyes on the iconic Constitution. As kids who grew up watching Nicolas Cage steal it in National Treasure, it feels only right to see where it lives. All of the documents are very faded by now but seeing them feels the most patriotic I’ve felt, well maybe, ever. Make sure to book an appointment in advance to streamline your visit.
Afterward, you can explore the surrounding museums. My favorite is the National Portrait Gallery; all of the portraits from history books in one place and more. Another great alternative is the International Spy Museum, it’s one of the top recommendations and fun for all ages. Another great recommendation to spend an afternoon is to venture into Chinatown for a culinary adventure. I love visiting Chinatowns in any city for authentic food and boba tea.

As the day winds down, take a leisurely stroll through the US Botanic Garden for the perfect Instagram shot. I’ve never met a Botanic Garden I didn’t love but this one is so special. The US Botanic Garden curates landscapes and greenery from across the United States. As well-traveled as I am, there are still corners of the US I haven’t seen and this gave me a taste of what they have to offer. An added plus: it’s free! Just have to make sure you don’t go too late.
Then, catch the sunset at DC for a breathtaking finale to your weekend escapade at View of DC.
And what better way to end the night than with craft cocktails and cozy vibes at Silver Lyan, a speakeasy gem tucked away in the heart of the city? I love speakeasies. It makes me feel so cool and in the know. The drinks at Silver Lyan were unique and tasty! The seating was small yet comfortable. The snacks included vegan and gluten-free options, as they should.
Before bidding adieu to DC, squeeze in one last activity. Whether it's hitting the gym or exploring one of the city's many trails, squeeze in one last museum, and make the most of your final moments in this dynamic city. With this itinerary in hand, my sister is sure to fall in love with Washington DC. So pack your bags.
